Thank you!Elisa   And now without further adeu......   Hello and thank you for stopping by! Demimonde was a polite 19th century term that was often used the same way we use the term "mistress" today. In the 19th century it primarily referred to a class of women on the fringes of respectable society supported by wealthy lovers (usually each had several). The term is also used to refer to these women as a group, and the social circles they moved in. As a group, the demimonde did not form a 'society' any more than modern prostitutes form a society. But they did represent a social class of women in the latter half of the 19th century and into the early 20th century who were commonplace fixtures in the upper class of French, English and, to some extent, American society. In the United States and Britain, they were (and still are) also often referred to as courtesans, though that term in the 19th century applied to a profession, whereas Demimonde/Demimondaine was used to describe a broader social class. The term is French, and means literally "half-world", implying those women existed on the fringes of the "real world." This is a prototype for my "Demimonde" ensemble, the second of the "East End Unfortunates" line that will debut on my website in the summer/fall. It is perfect for any event where you want to turn heads, and even reeanactors who are tired of portaying the "goodly woman"! This dress is made lightly following historically accurate patterns. It is made to fit over a corset, but if you can fit it without it should be fine as the top is boned and has three layers to keep a good shape.  The underskirt is luscious black velvet. It is an A-line with a 135" hem. The waistband closes with hook and eyes. Looks smashing by itself, imagine the skirt with a bright red corset and you'll knock 'em all down! Great for mix and match :) The overskirt is a classic bustle skirt, with a swagged front and side pleats, and the back is pulled up by ribbons. The underskirt does not allow for a bustle, but you could wear a bustle pillow underneath this overskirt to hold the dress out. But I think it looks fine down, too, Im just suggesting. The overskirt front is trimmed with black feather fringe, and gathered organza ribbon with trim down the middle. The top is very versatile, you could wear it as a jacket with only a few buttons closed, or open, or really any way!  The highlight is the magnificent stand up feather collar, a definite eye catcher to get you a million compliments! The front closes with ten antique styled buttons. The sleeve cuffs are trimmed with feathers as well. The top in interlined with 100% cotton and lined. The seams are all boned as well. The back has loose box pleats in staggered lengths to simulate a tailcoat. Check out the pictures but you have nooo idea how awesome this is in person! Please be aware that the dress will only be as accurate as your measurements! Wearing a corset underneath is recommended but not required, but before taking any measurements, please wear the undergarments you plan on wearing. (Bra, corset ect...) and then measure. Thanks!
