It was rugged and sexy. Like the bag that I had secretly longed for, it's made of durable materials and has a masculine structure, rigid and strong. Thick, top quality leather with buckles and straps and plenty of room for hiding secrets and technology- no zipper to get jammed or broken- it spoke to me of clandestine meetings and less traveled roads. Wear and age would only give it character and I knew this was a bag that wanted to be dragged to exotic places like Casablanca and Prague. I deserved a home for my laptop and a secret compartment for stashing my passport and traveler's cheques. It was heirloom quality, but it'd be a cold day in hell before I left it to my heirs. I was going to be buried with that bag. It screamed style and sophistication and more over it screamed that it had to be mine. The man carrying it reached down and unbuckled a few buckles and I swear I could smell the leather waft through the air. Even the lining did not disappoint, no nylon or synthetic fabric to be found, but beautiful pigskin. This bag was quite possibly the most beautifully crafted thing I had ever seen-hand stitched with sturdy nylon thread. Then the traveler unhooked the shoulder strap and transformed my bag into a backpack. Yes, I had already begun to think of it as mine. I contemplated knocking him over and wrenching it off him right then and there. Of course, the way that bag was made, I'd probably wrench my arms out of the joint first. He moved toward the door and I followed, a bit too closely. He spun on his heels and his eyes asked the question before his lips moved. "That bag" I said, "I've got to have it". Lucky you..... you can have it! The making of the bag: we are a small family owned business. The workshop is run by my father in law, Basso, who is a fourth generation leather craftsman and has over 45 years experience. He specializes in exotic skins and top quality hides. All of our bags are made of premium, hand-selected, vegetable-tanned leather. We also line our bags with vegetable tanned skins. Each bag is traditionally hand made and hand sewn with waxed sinew; which does not dry rot with age like the un-waxed, machine-sewn, cotton or linen threads used by most companies, today. Visiting the workshop is like stepping back in time; There is not a single piece of modern machinery in sight. Basso uses the exact same tools that his father and grand father used in creating the leather goods. In a week's time, Basso can make 2 bags. Before a bag goes out the door, he checks it for esthetics and strength, identifying spots that need smoothing out. This bag is made with such care that any one can be handed down from generation to generation with proper care. A Word about Leather:  Leather quality is determined by several factors. The quality of the hide before it gets tanned is important. Scratches and scars are a natural occurrence on range animals. The thickness of the leather is determined by things like...the breed of animal, the health and sex of the animal among others. Basso, uses only full grain vegetable-tanned leather hides sourced from the best tanneries in France and Italy, these hide are not sanded or filled to hide blemishes. Full grain is the best leather for aging. Basso hand select and cut the hides to avoid scars and blemishes that would be obvious in our bags. We have a lot of waste but the final result is a quality bag. Example: it takes almost a whole leather hide just to make one bag! The hardware: A trip to China looking for buckles found only low quality, easily chipped metal products- that wouldn't do.......durable yet elegant buckles and hardware could be found in none other than Italy. Details of the bag/backpack:  A timeless style, heirloom quality hand made from the best leather on the global market and lined in pigskin. Features durable leather straps and Italian buckle closures for longevity and security. There are no zippers to break, buttons to pop or snaps to crush. Heavy duty metal rings for attaching straps and metal rings keep your bag off the floor. Durable rigid construction hand stitched with heavy duty nylon thread and waxed sinew. Two inner compartments and a hidden compartment. There's a pen pocket, key strap, and interior pocket (perfect for stashing your blackberry, MP3 player or GPS) and an exterior pocket for your cell. Conveniently switches from bag to a backpack. This bag is robust in both look and feel. It has been built to last. The briefcase has a large flap that is held closed by three straps with buckles. You don't have to fasten all three buckles though. For daily use, you can just fasten the middle buckle and tuck the outer straps under. You'll also notice an adjustable shoulder strap and a convenient grab handle at the top of the bag. The grab handle is made of a large comfortable roll of leather. Once you have a gear bag with a grab handle, you'll never want one without it. It makes handling the bag so much easier. There are two inside compartments with plenty of space.
