The box is paper covered wood, with a charming design (celluloid?) on the lid. The design has the look of a lovely drawing or painting. The Victorian or Edwardian style is evident in the plum rosy cheeks and sweet expressions, not to mention the array of hats and bonnets shown! It looks as though the long image might be representing different seasons - snow and warm hats on the left , sunshine and bonnets on the right. The colors are vibrant - pale blues, pinks, rosy flesh tones, touches of red, yellow and golden brown hair, etc., Framed by a very pretty raised plastic or celluloid decorative border. The box is 3-3/8” X 12” and about 2-3/8” high. It is lined in a rich green fabric. The fabric is lightly soiled, has dust in crevices, and has a couple of fade spots but it is intact. The fancy outer paper on the box shows wear at edges, some scratches, and general fading and dinginess. The paper on the underside - less fancy - also shows edge wear, scrapes and scuffs. The metal hinges and clasp are darkened. The top part of the clasp is missing. The litho image and the border are great - there are some light soil specks here and there, fairly minor, and light, minor scratches on the celluloid, but it is intact and vivid.
