Description
Charivari: ornaments on a chain, worn with lederhosen. Charivari (which means "jumbled up") is the Bavarian name for a chain with different pendants like teeth of animals, coins, or amulets with the picture of a saint against diseases. May either be a chain (kette) across the mid-section or a pin (stecker) worn at the hip. Charivari originally were worn only by men, on the drop front flap of the lederhosen. For peasants they were a valuable status symbol, worn as jewelry or as a mascot for a successful hunt. A charivari was never bought, but was handed down in the family. Today women wear charivari with their traditional Alpine clothing, but they are less massive, more of a filigree-work.These chains and the trophies dangling on them have become collectors’ items in Europe, and have undergone a revival in Bavaria, Tyrolean region, where they originally came from.
